Below are some frequently asked questions which we hope will give you a better insight into our work.
Who formed G.R.P.?
A Swede, Mattias Norlander and George McGrand from Northern Ireland formed G.R.P. in July 2001. Both have previous experience of development work in Africa and worked for charities in the United States of America.
Is G.R.P. a religious mission?
No. GRP is a non-religious and non-political organization. However, we receive funding from individuals of all religious denominations and ethnic background. Our services are open to all.
What are GRP's objectives?
Our vision............ Economic and social empowerment of poor underprivileged communities in the Philippines, while creating an awareness of world poverty in developed nations.
Why work in the Philippines?
The province in which we work (Davao Oriental) is one of the poorest in the Philippines. Our major focus town is San Isidro, known in the Philippines as a municipality, and is made up of sixteen (16) different village groups (called barangays). The population is approximately 35, 000 which is divided into upland and lowland farmers and coastal fisher folks. The unemployment rate is 60% and average daily income per family is P 100.00 (Philippine peso), just under £ 1.00 (British Sterling). There is much work to be done in the town to improve the general standard of living and the local people have been exceptionally receptive to our projects both from local and provincial governments right through to our beneficiaries from the grass root level.
Does GRP intend to work in other regions?
Yes. We hope to start programmes in Africa and other Asian countries by 2007. however, this is dependant on future funding.
Where does GRP's funding come from and how is it spent?
The majority of GRP's funding comes from the public (door to door collections, monthly standing orders, membership fees and private donations). The Northern Ireland Police Service and Department of Social Development monitor all public collections, which is a legal requirement. The public funds raised are transferred to the Philippines on a monthly basis; for feeding the children at the House of Joy and running the joint projects of Kalumonan Development Centre and GRP.
